Earth Science Homework Help

Earth science deals with the study of Earth and geographic evidences grouped under solid earth science or 'Geology', derived from Greek word Geo meaning 'earth' and logy meaning 'study of'. Earth is a huge system and several billion years old as the determination of its age becomes difficult due to the elimination of older rocks by natural ruins. 'Dating' is a technique used to find out the age of global components e.g. tree dating - the tree rings found in trunk establishes its age; one ring is equal to a year. Land, water and space bodies, climatic and atmospheric factors comprise earth science. The structure of the earth includes outer crust, mantle (upper and lower) and core (inner and outer). Lithosphereis made of rocks;the major part of the earth as it is formed of crust and uppermost layer of mantle. Tectonic plates are found in the semi-mantle region and collision of these leads to earthquake and melting of crusts to volcanic eruptions thereby destructing natural environment. These explosions and earthquake imparts a low-frequency energy waves known as seismic waves, that determines the precision of the disasters occurred. Seismograph is used to detect and document earthquakes.

Water covers approximately 70% of earth's surface and the water mixes with the melting hot mantle to become magma and rises to form volcano. These magma or lava develops into igneous rocks. The other two common types of rocks are sedimentary and metamorphic rocks: sedimentary rocks are sediments of rock particles by weathering and metamorphic rocks by transforming one form into another (metamorphosis). Weathering refers to the process of breaking down of rock and travelling through places by water forces like sea, ocean, water currents and beds.

Sun radiates heat energy to the Earths atmosphere and maintains the temperature of the planet. The factors that affect the heat energy are temperature, energy in motion, earth's rotations, revolutions and seasons. Air, water and weather also balance the earth's atmospheric heat. Natural catastrophe is the destruction and damage in nature caused to life and land respectively. The causes for the natural disaster are directly proportional to the human's maintenance of vegetation and wildlife: proper regulatory natural resource management improves the ground but loss of which leads to biological hazards. Flood and cyclones are predictable whereas earthquake, volcanoes along with tsunami are unpredictable. Natural resources are the daily needs of mankind for better living and are categorized based on origin (biotic e.g. flora, fauna and fossil fuel, and abiotic e.g. air, land, water and heavy metals) and renewability(renewable - air and sun, and non-renewable resources - minerals).

Global Warming or Global Climate Change is a complex and become a controversial topic. The argument centers on some man-made gases that are entrusted by many to be increasing the earth's natural greenhouse, thereby causing the increases in temperatures.
